Update January 10, 2026: According to 425DXN his activity will extend until February 22, 2026.
Gabriel, LU1WGD, is currently a National Park Ranger (with a stint as a volunteer firefighter), and states, "I have always been attracted to communications equipment, and so in 2024 I was able to complete the online Amateur Radio course offered by the Comodoro Rivadavia Radio Club (LU2WA). After some practical operating sessions with a great local amateur radio operator, I received my license a few months ago.
Due to life's circumstances, I find myself on Laurie Island (Argentine Antarctic Sector) participating in the Antarctic Winter Campaign. That's how I recently received my first piece of equipment: an HF QRP SDR transceiver with a tuner and telescopic antenna for portable use, as well as an ATU-100 tuner, both of Chinese origin.
Operating QRP in voice mode is challenging, so I started exploring FT8. With limited resources, several repurposed components, the help of AI, and a bit of ingenuity, I was able to build an interface. The antenna is equally simple: a connector with two wires. I will probably be operating QRP FT8 as LU1WGB/Z until mid-February 2026, and you can also find me at (www.eQSL.cc/member.cfm?lu1wgb/z). It's slightly less likely that you'll find me operating from the base station LU1ZA.
Thank you for reading! 73!"
He was heard using the callsign LU1WGB/Z on 40m FT8 around 0314z on December 30, 2025.
