Update June 18, 2025:  I made it through my all-night CW (Morse code) and FT8 radio adventure on June 15! I was on the air from about 0800 to 1630 UTC—that’s just past 5 a.m. local time. Safe to say I won’t be doing that too often, but it was a fun break from the routine.

Conditions were good: 17 meters worked well for both CW and FT8, and 20 meters on FT8 kept the logbook filling until nearly sunrise.

Here’s when I plan to be on the air this week (UTC times shown):

June 19 | 07:00–10:00 (hard stop time)
• 40m FT8 Super Fox — Look for me around 7.056 MHz
• I’ll switch to Fox/Hound mode once things settle down

June 20 | 21:00–24:00
• 17m CW

June 22 | 16:30–19:00
• 17m FT8 Super Fox — Around 18.095 MHz

June 23 | 01:30–05:00
• 15m CW

June 25z| 16:30–19:00
• 20m FT8 Super Fox — Around 14.091 MHz

09 Jun ~ 01:30 - 05:00, 12m FT8 SuperFox mode, 24.911 if available.

A quick note about FT8 and QSOs, and QSLs.

FT8 — Given the exponential increase in QSOs now that I started in FT8, if the system did not log our contact, we will have to try again another time. I apologize, but I physically do not have enough time in the day to review screenshots and logs in the hopes for me to confirm the contact. We get to live another day in hopes for better band conditions to tx/rx.

QSOs — If we have already worked on a specific band and modes please refrain from calling again unless necessary, to allow other stations to a better opportunity to be heard and get their first contact with Wake Island. There is no extra credit given for duplicate contacts in the same year. Some day I hope to get Wake much further down the most wanted list, but until then the conversations need to be efficient.

QSL Cards — When you send me a QSL card I will reply will all QSLs logged up to that point I received and open your mail. No need to send multiple cards, unless you want to. I am looking into ClubLog’s OQRS service and may set that up soon. Additionally, I only reply to QSL cards every few months when I am off Wake Island so your patience is appreciated.
Donations to offset the costs for QSL services are appreciated! I hope to be able to offer you customer designed /KH9 inspired hats and t-shirts later in 2025 as well.

Update May 5, 2025: Big week out here on Wake Island! Richard (KR4CDI) and I made our first FT8 contacts using the new Icom IC-7300 and WSJT-X setup today. Might even be the first FT8 QSO from Wake—still checking on that. Either way, we’re on the air and testing the waters with the digital modes.

Upcoming Activity

  • 08 May ~ 07:00 - 09:00, 30m (CW or FT8… tough choice)

  • 11 May ~ 19:30 - 23:00, 12m SSB

73, Allen – KH7AL/KH9

Update April 26, 2025: This week, 17 meters lit up—over 230 QSOs logged in just two hours, with contacts ranging from Fiji and Costa Rica to Finland and Japan. It felt good to be back on the band after a bit of a break.

Upcoming operating times (UTC):

    27 April ~ 07:00 - 09:00, 20m SSB
04 May ~ off day for antenna building
    08 May ~ 07:00 - 09:00, 30m CW
    11 May ~ 19:30 - 23:00, 12m SSB

Also, in true "can't sit still" fashion, I built a trail. Yes, with a machete. It winds through a patch of forest near the old comms building—about 2km of shade and solitude. A great spot for running... or pretending you're in a Japanese forest doing Shinrin-yoku.

KH7AL posts the following information (edited): I’m back on Wake Island and couldn’t be happier to be surrounded by water, the warm breeze, and ready to get back on the air.

Upcoming On-Air Schedule: All times listed are UTC.

    20 April ~ 07:00 - 09:00, 12m SSB
    20 April ~ 19:30 - 23:59, 10m SSB

Would love to make a contact if you’re around—or just hear what projects you’re working on too.

Catch you on the air or in the comments on my blog!

73, Allen ~ KH7AL and back on KH9
