Update August 29, 2026:  At the DX Seminar (Tokyo Ham Fair) Cezar VE3LYC, Co-Leader announced that the 3Y0L Peter 1 DXpedition is potentially delayed due to contractual issues. The budget is 2.1 million US Dollars with the team responsible for 800,000 USDs. An anonymous benefactor will fund 1.2 million dollars. They are delaying the shipment of their container until the contract is finalized.

Update July 9, 2026:  Peter Island team has been working hard over the past few months and we will soon share more information with the DX community.

The expedition depends on us completing our team and adding more members.
We're looking for people with experience in cold climates. We're not necessarily looking for top-level operators. The most important thing is that they are team players with outdoor experience, a flexible attitude, practical skills, who understand what it means to be outdoors during winter, and who have the determination and willingness to do what it takes to make this a success.

Update April 28, 2025: Looking for more operators.

We have just completed our successful expedition to Bouvet and are using that experience to continue with Peter I Island, a Norwegian dependency in the Bellinghausen Sea. Our shipping container for the expedition is enroute from Cape Town to Texas with all the necessary equipment. At the same time, we are finalizing the details of this expedition.

The Peter I Island Expedition team is looking for more people who can collaborate as operators during the expedition, as we need to complete the team within a reasonable timeframe. Given that this entity currently ranks seventh on the most wanted DXCC list of most sought-after destinations, this expedition promises to be as challenging and complex as Bouvet, 3Y0K..

Update April 7, 2025: We plan to activate Peter I Island in February 2027 with a team of 19 operators. We have signed a financial agreement with a private group about sharing the cost for this DX-pedition.

The team received the landing permit for an amateur radio DXpedition to Peter I Island from the Norwegian Polar Institute in April 2024.

* Our 3Y0K container, carrying the expedition equipment, is being shipped to Texas for repacking before continuing on to Peter I Island.
* The team plans to spend approximately 20 days in the vicinity of the island, with about 14 days allocated for operations on the island itself.

Peter I DXpedition team is proud to announce today the signing of a vessel contract with ICETUGS (www.icetugs.com) that will take us to Peter I Island in February 2027 where we intend to stay 3 weeks around the island. ICETUGS, an Iceland based company, has an excellent track record in providing services for expeditions, cargo and fuel supplies, tugging, as well as rescue and camp setup in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. ICETUGS is the same company that will take Team Bouvet to their destin ation in 2026.

The team will continue working on securing a helicopter contract that will accommodate two helicopters to make this a safe and reliable operation as required by the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI). We are also scheduled to sign a contract with a leading Antarctic Expedition company, Spirit of Sydney, by this summer. This Expedition company has successfully organized 80+ expeditions to the Antarctic and will be leading the Peter I Expedition from a permit, safety, emergency and evacuation point of view. Worth noting, Spirit of Sydney has organized several other expeditions in the Antarctic region in collaboration with ICETUGS, which means that both the Expedition company and the Vessel will have had several years of experience working together before we go together to Peter I Island in 2027.

We obtained the Peter I Island landing permit from NPI in April 2024, and with this we have the permit needed to go onshore. Signing a vessel contract with ICETUGS for Peter I Island is an important milestone for us and shows a major commitment from the team to activate the #7 Most Wanted DXCC.

Update October 26, 2024: From Ken, LA7GIA:

We are sorting out last minute arrangements and are still looking for more operators for the Bouvet and Peter I team. DX funding is also highly dependent on us getting a full team of operators on board who contribute their participation fee. We estimate that we will be on the island just under 38 days for Peter I. We have all helicopter and landing permits issued by NPI to go to Peter I with a large scale operation. Planning is time consuming as logistics need to be coordinated with other expeditions and that is why it takes time to sign contracts. Our plans are to use the same ship for both DX expeditions.
First, the ship and crew will take us to Bouvet where we will land with a helicopter, then our equipment will be later shipped to South America and stored there before returning a year later to go to Peter I Island, scheduled for late January 2027. Our plans are to go ashore on Peter I with two helicopters the first week of February 2027. This way of running DX expeditions is a huge advantage for the seventh most requested DX expe dition to Peter I Island.

Update June 4, 2024: The team plans to activate Peter I Island in February 2027 with a team of 19 operators. We have signed a financial agreement with a private group about sharing the cost for this DX-pedition. The DX-pedition budget and our share is around $825,000, of which we must deposit $340,000 in 2024.
It should be noted that the total cost of this expedition is approximately $2,000,000, including all logistics, marine, aviation, insurance, safety and rescue, and Antarctica permits. However, the synergies with the small private group and with the Spirit of Sydney Expedition Company (detailed below) have provided enough cost sharing to make this Peter I expedition affordable, albeit still expensive. This is a rare opportunity to activate Peter I and without these unique opportunities to share costs, Peter I would not be possible. At the time of activation in 2027 it will be 21 years since the last DX-pedition to this island, and cost is the primary reason. We have a unique occasion to bring Peter I back on the air. We are looking for more SSB/CW operators for the Peter I Island DXpedition. The dates are confirmed from January 28 to February 26, 2027. We have received entry permission from the Norwegian Polar Institute and are currently negotiating the boat contract. This DXpedition team will be made up of 19 operators; currently we are 10 operators. We are now looking for 3 or 4 additional operators for this expedition in a short time. Please contact us at admin@3y0.no. This is an expensive DXpedition with a high participation fee, duration of 30 days + travel time.

Plans for Peter I Island DXpediton (2026) in progress. We have secured a vessel, and we’re now building a team of 19 operators that will go to Peter I Island in February 2026 and stay there for 14 days. The vessel is a proper Antarctica vessel with 2 helicopters, two Expedition leaders and with all permits needed. We are working closely with the Norwegian Polar Institute to obtain the landing permit. A website will be created and more information about Peter I Island DXpedition will be released later. Fundraising is expected to start 2024.
