Update August 19, 2026: I'm still active on HF but my interest has shifted to 2 meter EME. Construction of the EME station is currently ongoing. Will start RX testing in late August. Antenna is 16 horizontal elements on a 37 foot (11.3 meter) boom. Amplifier is 1kW but a 1.5kW amplifier from W6QPL is coming in December. Main mode will be Q65 but enthusiastic to try CW with Big Gun stations. AZ/EZ via Armstrong. Maximum antenna elevation is 45 degrees for all stations. For my EU moonset minimum antenna elevation is 5 degrees due to several tall beachfront hotels blocking the moon. For NA/SA the moon starts being workable at an elevation of 6 degrees. Contemplating adding automated AZ/EL rotation and a second antenna in 2027. Radio is a highly modified IC-9700.
All EME activity will use the callsign KH0W
The EME station is on a 4th floor rooftop terrace 1/4 mile (400 meters) from the ocean. Total length of Heliax from the radio to the antennas feed point is 29 feet. (9 meters) The preamp is 1 meter behind the antennas feed point mounted on a heavy duty Fiberglass telescoping vertical pole which is lengthened/shortened from the ground. When the antenna is horizontal the telescoping pole is at it's tallest. As the front of the antenna is elevated the pole is shortened to match the rear of the antennas descending feed point height. This unique setup allows for a very short 1 meter long coax jumper from the preamp (mounted on the telescoping pole) to the antennas feed point.
Update April 27, 2026: QRV once again!!! I'm running 300mW on FT8 from a QRPp radio powered by 9 Volt disposal batteries. Antenna is a telescopic 20 - 10 meter vertical with a single elevated radial......Putting station after station in the log with this minimalistic setup.
Update April 14, 2026: My Yagi's, Towers & Verticals Were all Destroyed by Super Typhoon Sinlaku on 14 April, 2026. It will Take Months to Rebuild Everything.
Update September 26, 2024: QRV on 160 Meters Starting in October. I haven't been on 160 Meters since 2021 so my return should generate interest from "Top Band Enthusiasts" looking for KH0 on FT8 and SSB.
I will be active on the FM Amateur Radio Satellites of AO-91, ISS, SO-50, SO-121, IO-86 and PO-101 starting in October. If you are in Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Northern Australia, Guam, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia or far Eastern China (Shanghi) the chances of a successful QSO are excellent. My horizon for acquisition of signal is Zero degrees. (all satellites rise from the ocean's horizon) Loss of Signal is also Zero Degrees. (all satellites set into the ocean's horizon).

Update February 19, 2022: After 2.5 years of activity and with 65,000 QSO in the log, Tom has gone QRT and dismantled his station.
Tom, KC0W update about his KH0 activity (Tnx DX-World):
Things are going well as KH0/KC0W. Just under 27,000 QSOs since moving here last year. Sorry for all the stations I just can’t hear with my verticals. I had a large tri-band Yagi shipped to me a few months ago but have yet to install it. My tower is waiting for the Yagi to be installed at the height of 24 meters as soon as I “get around to it”. The Yagi will help immensely with stations in Europe & the east coast of NA. I’m getting really, really tired of operating FT8. As soon as the Yagi goes up I will probably go back to 100% CW.
