Update October 27, 2025:  The PJ6Y Adventure is Winding Down

After an amazing weekend participating in CQWW SSB 2025, the PJ6Y adventure is coming to a close.

Our Young Operators team achieved an incredible milestone — over 55,000 QSOs!

Today, we begin dismantling about half of our antennas as we start preparing for our return trips home. Two local and two remote stations will remain active until late Tuesday.

Update October 20, 2025:    The PJ6Y team has just surpassed 20,000 QSOs, marking a major milestone in their on-air operations. The young amateur radio operators are taking full advantage of excellent propagation conditions, sharpening their operating skills, and connecting with stations worldwide.
 

Operating around the clock, the team currently has three local and two remote stations active on the air. The on-island contingent of 14 operators is joined by approximately 30 young remote  operators from around the globe — a truly international collaboration showcasing the next generation of DXers.

“We have a bit of antenna work to complete today in advance of our participation in CQWW SSB,” shared Gregg, W6IZT. “The weather has been somewhat of a challenge, with frequent showers and lightning. With heavier rains forecast from Thursday through our departure, we’re accelerating our contest preparations.”

Despite the challenging conditions, spirits remain high.

Update September 28, 2025:  Support the Future of Amateur Radio – Help Launch the PJ6Y DXpedition to Saba Island!

As you may know, something truly special is happening this October – a DXpedition not only technically ambitious, but one that offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young amateur radio operators to experience DXpeditioning at the highest level for the very first time.

The PJ6Y DXpedition will activate the island of Saba (IOTA NA-145) with a diverse international team of 12–14 operators, including nine first-time young DXpeditioners! Additionally, 30–40 young hams will join remotely using the innovative NexGen2 RiBs made possible through a grant from the Northern California DX Foundation.

Without support from clubs and individuals this opportunity would not be possible.

This is more than a DXpedition – it is an investment in the future of our hobby.

Our goal is to fully cover the travel and operational expenses of all our young team members – so that financial circumstances are never a barrier to participation for these enthusiastic and dedicated young hams.

The team will set up three local and two remote stations, operating CW, SSB, FT8, and satellite, from two separate operating locations.

To ensure success, we are holding a series of workshops led by DX veterans Gene K5GS, Glenn W0GJ, Ralph K0IR, Gerben PG5M, and Gregg W6IZT covering a broad range of topics related to the planning and execution of a successful Dxpedition. We are preparing these young hams to become future DXpedition leaders.

Operational Plans                                                                                                          

We will have stations at two separate sites on the north side of Saba Island, half a mile apart—both locations providing excellent take-off angles to Europe, North America, and Asia.

We will operate a total of five stations:   

    Three local stations equipped with Elecraft K3s + KPA500 amplifiers.
    Two remote stations using NexGenRiB2s, generously provided by The Northern California DX Foundation.

Antennas will include:

    Inverted L and RX antennas for 160/80 meters.
    Verticals for 40 and 30 meters.
    A triband Yagi for 20/17/10 meters.
    A 5-band Hexbeam for 20/17/15/12/10 meters.
    A 5-element Yagi for six meters.
    A VHF/UHF satellite station.
    Filters and multiplexers to negate inter-station interference.

We will utilize ClubLog real-time uploads and leaderboard.                                                       

 Please note: There will be no unattended operation.

Remote stations will be manned by a team of 30–40 young operators, coordinated by:

Logistics and Travel                                                                                                                        

All equipment will be transported as checked baggage by U.S. team members. Most of the U.S. contingent will arrive in Charlotte on October 14 for an early morning departure on the 15th, arriving on Saba by ferry one day in advance of the remainder of the team. European team members will coordinate travel through Schiphol or CDG, to St. Maarten, then connecting by air to Saba.

Calendar Update                                                                                                                        

The PJ6Y DXpedition is scheduled for October 16–30, 2025 and includes participation in the CQWW DX SSB Contest. We are also in the process of determining if a POTA activation is feasible. This is a ground-up build—not an existing station. Our mission is to create a genuine DXpedition experience for our youth team.

We are pleased to announce that, in October 2025, a team of 12 to 14 operators will activate PJ6Y from the stunning island of Saba. This expedition represents a significant step in our ongoing mission to inspire and guide the next generation of radio amateurs through hands-on DXpedition experiences.

Meet the team!

Our diverse team includes seasoned operators Gregg/W6IZT, Dean/W2FQ, Nathan/K4NHW, Connor/KD9LSV, and Robin/W7YED, along with a group of young and enthusiastic first-time Dxpeditioners: Matus/OM8ATE, Chris/KK8C, Vincent/PC2Y, Seth/N4XTT, George/YO9LIG, Emilia/YO8YL, and Ewan/KK7EXT. We are in the process of adding one or two more operators to our crew. Our friendly hosts on Saba will be Jeff/NM1Y and his wife Shelley.

Relying on Young Operators

Four of our young team members have progressed from the successful operation of Rotuma 3D2Y, demonstrating the effectiveness of our recruitment process. In a pioneering collaboration with Youth on the Air (YOTA), we will introduce an additional 30 to 40 young radio amateurs to the world of DX expeditions via remote stations. Thanks to a generous grant from NCDXF, these young operators will use two NexGenRiB2 remote stations, based on Elecraft K4Ds, designed and built by our team, which includes Gregg/W6IZT, Warren/KD4Z, and John/AA4AN.

Workshops for Success

Understanding that thorough preparation is key to a successful expedition, we are organizing a series of workshops prior to our departure. Led by experienced DX expeditioners Gene K5GS, Glenn W0GJ, and Gerben PG5M, these sessions will address vital topics such as funding, station design, logistics, risk mitigation, safety, and team responsibilities. Our goal is not only to prepare participants for the expedition but also to equip them with the leadership skills necessary for future DX expeditions.

What to expect in Saba

Upon arrival, the island team will establish three local stations and two remote stations from scratch. We will be active on CW, SSB, and FT8 from 80m to 6m, including operations with a satellite station. We plan to document our experiences via Zoom and podcasts, allowing our supporters and donors to follow our adventure in real time.

Announcing the 2025 PJ6Y DXpedition to Saba Island

Co-leaders Gregg W6IZT, Dean W2FQ, and Jeff NM1Y, in collaboration with Youth on the Air (YOTA), are thrilled to announce our upcoming DXpedition to Saba!

We will arrive on Saba on October 17, 2025, and be on the air through October 29, 2025. Our primary operating site is situated on the north side of the island at an elevation of approximately1,200 feet. The team will consist of 14 on-island operators, including eight young operators under the age of 25. Notably, four of these young ops participated as remote operators in the recent 3D2Y DXpedition to Rotuma. The local team will be complimented by 25-30 remote operators.

We will have 3 stations available for local operators. We extend a special thanks to the Northern California DX Foundation for their generous grant, to construct two NexGenRiBs2 stations based on Elecraft K4Ds for remote operation.

Activity will be on 80–6 meters + satellite and we will also participate in the CQWW SSB contest.
