This map of 27-June-2004 covers from 07:45z to 12:00z. What happened this was is far beyond I can explain in detail. The fun begun at 08:05 when a cloud formed over the Adriatic.15 minutes later a new cloud appears over Romania. At 09:00 the cloud over the Adriatic is extremely strong an begins to spread towards the south-west, resulting in a huge cloud covering all central and northern Italy. At 10:00 a new cloud shows up over TA while at about 11:00 the cloud over Italy begins vanishing. At 13:00 a new cloud appears over southern France and half an hour later yet another one over Germany. Here begins one of the most interesting parts of the day, look at the two clouds over Germany between 14:00 and 15:00, one at the north-east and another at the south-west. They were almost surely the explanation of the exceptional QSOs between EA and OH (over 2600 km) providing the optimum conditions for chordal QSOs (groud-cloud-cloud-ground). After 15:00 things get calmed for about one hour, but at 16:10 here we go again. Two new reflection areas appear almost at the same time, one over Southern France and another over Southern Ukraine. The map was so large that I have had to cut it into three parts. You can also look at the other maps covering from 12:00 to 16:00z and from 16:00 to 17:22z

This animation can take some time (minutes) to load because of its size. Be patient and wait !

This map shows the evolution, size and MUF of the sporadic-E cloud that caused the opening on 144 MHz. and it is an estimation based on the information I have picked up here and there of QSO and reports of European stations. I don't claim it to be accurate but just an estimation that could help understand what happened that day.

Also please notice that sometimes you will see MUF rise very quickly.  This is because of the almost complete lack of data for frequencies between 51 and 144 MHz. that leads to shown MUF rising almost 90 MHz in one minute.  You should understand that this is not the usual behaviour of MUF, but the result of that lack of data.

Short opening, just 15minuts in jn45op, pity not Z3 stations qrv :(
Almost the day one of Es clouds was over my head...that perhaps cause my headache ;-)

You can help develop these maps!. After the openings, please send me your logs of 50, 70 and 144 MHz QSO via sporadic-E (Much preferably in ADIF format)
