Information

Update August 26, 2023: Expedition to Fair Isle is cancelled. No flights all weekend due to low level clouds surrounding Shetland with no obvious sign of the clouds clearing. Fair Isle airstrip has no visual landing instrumentation, hence no flights.

There will be no activity from mainland Shetland either as all accommodation is fully booked. Team will cut their losses and head home overnight. Only bad luck shines today!

Update August 23, 2023: This coming Friday, weather and airplanes permitting, Jonathan MM0OKG and I hope to be active from Fair Isle EU-012 until next Monday. Although the counter is not particularly rare, the grid is (IO99), along with the fact the island itself is seldom on air.

We are really restricted in what we can take due to baggage limits (especially on the 20 minute Shetland to Fair Isle flight) but hope to QRV on 20-17-15-12m and 6m if propagation allows. SSB and FT* only. No CW.

Outwith Rockall this is my final activation of all the GM-IOTA. It's not an easy place to get to and we could have simply stayed in a nice hotel on Shetland, but let's go to a proper remote island instead :) Fingers crossed anyway.

With a population of just 55 people, Fair Isle is Britain’s most remote inhabited island. Marooned halfway between the Shetland and Orkney archipelagos, this tiny dot of an island is often not shown on maps.

Weather, seas and flights permitting, look for Col MM0NDX and Jonathan MM0OKG to be active from Fair Isle, EU-012 as MS0INT/P during August 25-28, 2023. Due to flight baggage restrictions this will be a lightweight expedition with 100w radios, vertical antennas and a small 6m beam.

The last activity from here was in 2015. Back then electricity was not available from 2300z to 0700z but now things have changed so expect some activity during these hours too.
