Information

Update March 7, 2023: Elvira 9U5R went QRT yesterday. She made 32,000 QSO in total. Combined, 9U5R and 9U4WX made over 60,000 QSO, of which 16,000 were on CW and SSB.

Update March 1, 2023: 9U4WX QRT. Elvira 9U5R will be active 1 more week of SSB and FT8 due to equipment seizure the first 2 weeks in Burundi. Will attempt to activate 6m if conditions are right.

Update February 15, 2023: "Elvira 9U5R still has no luggage. It’s being held by local authorities. This means we have no other equipment including a missing 6m antenna. The import of amateur radio equipment is strictly limited and fees are in the thousands of USD here in Burundi. A new beverage was mounted yesterday. First QSOs on 40 & 80M CW were made. "

Update February 8, 2023: The Spiderbeam antenna is now up and working fine covering 5 bands.

Update February 7, 2023: Yesterday, a giant storm with a gale damaged the verticals. Unfortunately, the main turn signal was not up yet. I thought we were on Bouvet island...
The vericals tore out the anchors but did not break. Special thanks to guys from Spiderbeam.

Update February 6, 2023: 80m vertical installed.

Update February 4, 2023: DX-World publishes the following:

He (9U4WX) and Elvira (9U5R) have been delayed setting up all antennas / stations by the authorities because they kept hold of some baggage. Vlad now has his, but they currently still keep Elvira’s.

Today they built a monoband vertical for 40m on the seashore, but are threatened by hippos and the hotel owner did not really have an understanding about their antenna placement, especially for the 80 & 40m verticals.

Beverage on ground for JA is possible to stretch out, but for EU/NA it will be a problem. So far Elvira is working on 30m and Vlad on 40m only FT8. There are 2 CW contests this weekend so on Monday they switch to that mode.

Update February 3, 2023: Today the cases with transceivers arrived and we managed to hang up the dipole on 30 m.  We were delayed by a hippo that lay down near our place. One of the biggest killers in Africa. A few minutes after midnight, Vlad 9U4WX started operating FT8 on 10.131. Tomorrow we continue building antennas.

73 from Burundi. Vlad OK2WX

Update January 31, 2023: Vlad is on his way to Burundi. At 2000z today he was at Vienna airport. He then flies to Brussels before going south to 9U.

Update January 19, 2023: The antennas have been shipped. Total weight 66 kg. Expected arrival at final destination is Wednesday next week.Keep an eye on our website.
Elvira 9U5R and Vladimir 9U4WX

Update January 3, 2023: Also Elvira IV3FSG, came in same time to Burundi as 9U5R, and of course as good friends they will be active together with Vlad to give everyone the possibility to connect them in various ways and on various bands. 9U4WX & 9U5R are not two different shipments but they will be together and will work to give the dx community the possibility to have 9U in the most number of bands and modes. Please, if you connect one of them in a band and mode don't reply the QSO, give the possibility to everyone to make the qso in the missing band and mood. thank you

Update January 3, 2023: Preparations for the expedition are proceeding as planned. At the end of the year, after several months, we managed to obtain all import permits for amateur radio equipment and therefore the antennas will be shipped in advance in mid-January by air freight to Bujumbura

Update December 24, 2022: QSL via Club Log's OQRS (preferred) or via IZ8CCW.  The  complete log will be uploaded to LoTW after 5-6 months.

Vlad OK2WX will be active as 9U4WX from Burundi between Feb 4 to Feb 27, 2023 on HF bands 80-40-20-17-15-12-10 meters CW and SSB with 100 W power.
